The Trustees of the Board
   of Rotary International have
   declared that Environment &
   Sustainability will be the
   7th Area of Focus.

The environment joins peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development.

The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington has  a long history of projects which support environment and sustainability including:
-  operating  2 Opportunity Shops which reduce landfill, recycle unwanted goods, re-use unwanted clothing and divert goods to relevant recycling locations.
-  creating gardens at local schools which provide educational opportunities for children, develop knowledge and understanding of food plants and provide sustainable gardens
-  shipped hospital, medical and educational equipment and supplies from Donations in Kind to overseas communities in need
-  the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds project which collects out of date playgrounds from councils and schools and sends them to disadvantaged countries.  This again reduces all this material going to landfill, provides a re-use and re-furbish program and recycles materials.
-  support for garden programs at local aged care homes

-  support as a member club for Donations in Kind, the ultimate environmental project.  Donations in Kind receives unwanted, good quality equipment and materials from schools, hospitals, clothing manufacturers,  book and stationery suppliers, libraries, and other businesses.  This equipment is then sorted, packed and despatched by Rotary Clubs to disadvantaged countries.
- support as a member club for Western Emergency Relief Network which provides families in distress and need with household goods, many donated by local organisations and clubs and free to families sponsored by a community service or welfare organisation.
