President's ponderings:

It was an afternoon tinged with sadness but also gratitude as we met to farewell and than Lorry for her work as Manager of the Fit4Use Store in Werribee last week.
Fittingly I also acknowledged PP Allan Bruno
for his effort
s in initiating the store and fulfilling Lorry's request.  The store has been a positive strength in the Werribee and Wyndham communities for 5 and a half years and has provided much needed support for many people.

Thank you to all the marvellous volunteers who have supported Lorry over the years.
It was wonderful to see so many of them again.    READ MORE

I would also like to acknowledge the 2 volunteers who have stepped up to share the Manager role now: Patricia Weston and Minnie Stimpson will share the week with Judy and Sue.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE WORLD GO AROUND
Volunteering brings people together; it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone. Together, through volunteering, we are changing communities for the better. We are, Better Together.

Rotary was built on the premise of service through vocational skills and volunteers today are doing this more and more.

It is timely in National Volunteer Week that we give thanks for all Rotarians, family, friends and community members who support our work and expressly reach out to them to say THANK YOU!

Mental Health Forum
Thank you to all who attended and assisted with the forum.
Our Keynote Speaker, Maria Ruberto was inspirational in her presentation sharing some background, signs and symptoms, the 2 week rule and the emotional toll which COVID10 has taken on all people but especially the young people.

Dr Parisa Shiran, Catherine Johnston and Fatima Ibrahim added to the presentation with their expertise in multicultural impacts, language barriers, lack of understanding and expertise in mental health.  Living with a mental illness and the toll it takes on family members who do not have the experience or know where to go for help.
Mental Health First Aid featured prominently in all discussions and all attendees received a HELP SHEET with contact details.

Once again my sincere thanks to our presenters for their time.

Appeal for the Sputnik Orphanage, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka
The economic situation is so bad that Dr Eshantha Ariyadasa reports they are struggling to buy food for the girls, much less school requisites.
He reports that the diesel price has gone up by 250% and the Petrol by 300% within last three months.A loaf of bread (450g) was Rs. 60 a month ago and today it is Rs. 170: a cup of tea which was Rs. 10 a few weeks ago is now Rs. 40-50. One Kg of rice which was Rs. 70-100 three months ago is now Rs. 270-400. Yet, nobody’s  salary has been increased.
Please donate if you are able:

DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
Shraddha, Josie and I attended the virtual District Assembly last Saturday where incoming District Governor Amanda Wendt asked us the Imagine Rotary.
We were welcomed with an address by Zone Director Jessie Harman encouraging us to consider the new wave of volunteers:
-  volunteers want to work on hands on projects which appeal to their beliefs
- they are not interested in attending meetings for the sake of a meeting
-  they want to volunteer at their time and opportunity
- there is a rise in digital volunteering
- more people aged 25-40 are volunteering but not in traditional fields.
- they need to be satisfied with their role and the community they are in

So how do we attract people to Rotary?  The Zone regionalisation project is one part of this puzzle.  But, the most important element is to attract interest, engage people in our work and then discuss membership.  Who do you know who would be a great fit for our club?
Invite them to a meeting, to visit or work in the Op Shop or to approach us with an idea.

The District Budget for 2022-2023 was also approved with a small increase in fees mainly due to the increased insurance levy.

FIT4 Use Store Werribee

As advised at a club meeting in April, the Board has approved the handover of the Fit4 Use Store to the Rotary Club of Werribee as from 1 July 2022.
With Lorry Rowe's retirement and the relocation of PP Allan Bruno to Portarlington, the Board have had difficulty identifying a member to take on the supervision role.
Discussions have been held with their President Graeme Roper and Board member Michael Redding as to the handover and the plan is now in place.
All members are thanked for their work on the store and are encouraged to visit before 30 June to speak to and thank the volunteers.
I will be visiting weekly to arrange cash banking.

ALMONER'S REPORT:

Len Seddon has been hit with the flu after his trip to Warrnambool for the Grand National.  I spoke with him last week and he was recovering.

Geoff Cawsey and Dulcie Heard have set off for a well deserved holiday and will be away for 2 weeks.

Peter and Bev are part way through a 2 week exploration of the Northern Territory and South Australia with a trip on the Ghan.  He will be in Adelaide this week and will meet with the team from RORP-SA.
Peter has sent some photos for us to be jealous of!
